Help! I don't speak French! A quick briefing for our English-speaking audience about this web site.

You are no doubt wondering what is going on here. Although we are hopeful that one day the entire content of this web site will be translated to English, for the moment most of its written content is available in French only.

This web site is about underground rock bands from the Quebec City area, from the eighties to today. Its particular focus is music by Bruno Tanguay, a former record store owner in Quebec City, and in our opinion one of the most influential persons of the underground scenes in both Montreal and Quebec City.

Bruno Tanguay, alias Satan Bélanger

satanbelanger.net is a non-profit project. It does not have any advertising, does not use annoying pop-ups and does not sell its email list of regular users. Please feel free to download our music and to burn yourselves and your friends cds. Nearly all this material is previously unreleased and has been provided by the bands themselves. All we ask is that if you like something, please email us to say so, a little encouragement goes a long way.

The site does not stream music, we recommend you save the files to your hard drive before listening to them, by right-clicking and selecting the "Save Target As" pop-up menu item.

The complete list of free audio and video files available on this web site can be found here.

The page of recommended audio cds we urge you to purchase along with links to online stores independent from us can be found here.

The main section of this site concerning Bruno Tanguay, les Biberons Bâtis and Satan Bélanger can be found here. The brief history of les Biberons Bâtis can be found here and a reminescence about the long-gone Vinyl record store in Quebec City can be found here.

The Quebec City underground rock scene in the 1980's

Bruno Tanguay started out with a band called Y'a D'la Joie (meaning "there is joy"), which was an industrial noise trio. A live show from this band from 1982 is showcased here. A year or so later, Bruno was the lead singer of a more ambitious ensemble named Turbine Depress. This web site reproduces Turbine Depress' official cassette release "Test test test" in its entirety, as well as its contribution to the Blender Mix LP band compilation released in 1983. Finally, we also showcase a live show recording featuring Turbine Depress.

After 1984, Turbine Depress broke up and Bruno started recording solo material with room mates and friends. The first release resulting from these efforts was a cassette called "Attaboy on souffre" (meaning "Attaboy we're suffering"). The first side of the cassette was by the duo of Piki Soul (Marie-Hélène Houde) and Bert under the band name "Espadons" ("the swordfish"). The second side of the cassette was by Bruno with Piki and Bert under the band name "Biberons Bâtis" ("the well-built baby bottles").

Those recordings by the Espadons are on this web site and can be heard by clicking here. All of the remaining material from the "Attaboy" tapes can be downloaded from here, including a couple of songs off of Bruno's two official cds.

Bertrand was a member of the Modernes Pickles from 1980 to 1985, a band which influenced Bruno, and which many people consider as the first underground rock band in Quebec. They also have a few videos from live shows which can be seen on this web site by going to our complete list of audio and video download page and scrolling all the way down. After recording with Bruno, Bertrand was bassist of the Unexpected. His new band is Lunasam, with a brand new CD released in 2008.

Before recording with Bruno, Piki Soul was in an important experimental band called Chienne 50 Cents. Chienne 50 Cents' official cassette release called "Recco recco" made around 1982 with Maxime Rioux is truly beautiful and we recommend you start your satanbelanger.net listening experience with these recordings. This site also features rare recordings by Chienne 50 Cents nevr released before.

Piki Soul moved to Montreal in 1986 and was briefly in the Mongols with Kim Shadow (Raymond Simard), who passed away in 1987 (their rare demo recordings can be heard by clicking here). Later Piki was in the IUD'z (a jam with some girl friends) and then moved to New York State -- she is studying to be a yoga instructor in NYC right now. While in NYC, she was in the Maneaters, the Ultra 5, then as a duo with Andrea Kusten under the band name Real-Eyes, and released her last solo effort as a cassette several years ago called ("My Dog Tuesday").

Piki Soul was Bruno's squeeze in the eighties, and her leaving town and breaking his heart was the inspiration for the "Attaboy on Meurt" cd by the Biberons Bâtis (that title translates to "Attaboy we are dying").

The title of the first cd follows up on the cassette recordings: Attaboy on Souffre and Attaboy on Agonise ("Attaboy we are agonizing"). "Satan Bélanger" is the name of one of Bruno Tanguay's invented personas on that cd and is the inspiration for the name of this web site.

Bruno did not release anything for 7 years after the cd, which compiled the best of the cassettes remixed plus 7 or 8 extra tunes. The "lost" recordings which did not make it to the first cd are all on this web site and can be heard by clicking here. Bruno recorded lots of new tunes between cd's, but when he was finally nudged into releasing a second cd by everyone around him, he created new music from scratch by himself and did not title it "Attaboy On Ressucite" as discussed. He wanted to "step away from being a comedian" and did something different. The second cd by the Biberons Bâtis (actually Bruno Tanguay solo) is called "OK c'est correct" ("OK that's right"). Currently in 2004, Bruno is about to release a new cd compilation of obscure French bands from the sixties and seventies, and is planning the third Biberons Bâtis cd.

The web site concerns itself with Bruno's long-time musical associates as well.

After 1985, the lead singer of the Modernes Pickles, Michel Shink, launched several solo bands, most of which have featured music on this web site. Among these bands were Dr.Itch and the Tarentulas, the Trash Monsters, Soul Screechers, and finally Camel Clutch.

Camel Clutch were formed on or around 1986 and their powerful rock'n'roll presence has won over anyone who has seen or heard them. In 1990, they wrested the first prize away from well-known Quebec artist Bruno Pelletier at a French-language band competition called "Rock Envol", organized by the French arm of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in association with MusiquePlus. This led to nation-wide television broadcasts of their shows, numerous radio station and television interviews, and countless newspaper articles. They also toured France and released a 45 rpm single in 1990. After winning the contest, Michel Shink decided to follow his girlfriend back to her home in Victoria, British Columbia and left the band, but he returned two years later to start a tradition of annual shows with Camel Clutch. In 2004, Camel Clutch are still together, with an excellent studio recording that was in limited release on cd in 2003 pending a distribution deal which is still in the works. In December 2002, satanbelanger.net presented three complete shows by Camel Clutch on MP3 and then one more in November 2003.

Daniel Pelletier has been playing music in bands since he was 13 years old, and he participated in recordings by the Modernes Pickles and was their official photographer. He also recorded with the Biberons Bâtis as well as numerous others. He created the score for an animated short film by Jean Théberge called "Traversée" in 1998.

Martin Shink, Michel's younger brother, was in several bands after the Modernes Pickles, including Zéro Zône Deluxe, which have a video clip featured on this web site.

Finally, we have a 20th anniversary section on the Blender Mix LP, a compilation of Quebec City and Ottawa bands from 1983. Featured are Turbine Depress, Chienne 50 Cents, Modernes Pickles, Outbreak and Herg Korps from Quebec City and the Randypeters, Last Prayer and Porcelain Forehead from Ottawa. To celebrate the anniversary, two members of the original bands as well as the editor responsible for the fanzine No Cause For Concern met and talked about the Blender Mix event. This interview is available here in English only. The meeting was deemed so productive it will likely lead to a strategic partnership with the web site nocauseforconcern.com in the future.

The web site makes a point of doing a presentation of new archives regularly, so please come visit us again. We also have a more long term project for a hard copy of all this material in the planning stages.
